Drinkwater struggles for game time at Chelsea
Danny Drinkwater has struggled to hold down a regular first-team place for Chelsea since joining them in 2017.
After Drinkwater impressed for Leicester alongside N’Golo Kante in their title winning season, the Englishman was once again reunited with the Frenchman at Stamford Bridge.
Drinkwater is believed to have cost Chelsea around £35m.
However, Drinkwater hasn’t really been that impressive for Chelsea, making just 22 appearances during his debut season.
This past season saw Drinkwater’s game time reduced even further, as he made just one appearance throughout 2018/2019. That game was the Community Shield, and the midfielder only came on as a sub.
Drinkwater also doesn’t look to have impressed news Blues’ boss Frank Lampard, either.
He has featured in a few pre-season games, but missed the club’s most recent outing vs Borussia Monchengladbach.
Chelsea can’t offload Drinkwater
Drinkwater has recently been linked with a move to fellow Premier League outfit, Brighton.
That move was reported to be a potential loan.
However, the Evening Standard have since provided a new update on Drinkwater and a potential transfer.
As per the ES, both newly-promoted Norwich and Brighton have enquired about signing the 29-year-old on loan.
But Drinkwater’s high wages are believed to be causing a problem in any potential deal.
The Evening Standard explains:
Both clubs [Norwich and Brighton] will struggle to afford his salary of at least £100,000-a-week. It means Chelsea might have to consider still paying some of his wages to get him to go elsewhere.
