Pulisic backs Tammy Abraham to recover from penalty miss vs Liverpool

Liverpool 2 – Chelsea 2

Liverpool and Chelsea went head-to-head on Wednesday for the 2019 European Super Cup.

Liverpool had lifted the trophy last in 2005, while Chelsea had won it just once before, back in 1998.

The first-half was rather poor from both sides, but it would be Chelsea who took the lead in the 36th minute through Olivier Giroud.

A rather flat-footed Liverpool attack was given a lift in the second-half when Roberto Firmino replaced Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Firmino had an almost instant impact, combining with Sadio Mane to equalise in the 48th minute.

The game then went to extra-time, with further strikes from Mane and Jorginho having sent the clash to penalties.

Abraham misses the final penalty

Both sides took pretty good penalties, but Kepa probably should have done better with a few of Liverpool’s.

The score was 5-4 to Liverpool when Tammy Abraham stepped up to take his spot-kick.

Unfortunately for Chelsea, Abraham missed the penalty, and while Adrian did step off his line to save the spot-kick, it has since been cleared up as to why he was not penalised for doing so:

Regardless, new Chelsea signing Christian Pulisic has since come out in support of Abraham:

“We said to him ‘It’s penalties, man – somebody has to miss’.

“He’s going to get his head up. Obviously it’s tough but penalties are like that.

“He can deal with it and he’ll be fine. He’ll move on, he’ll score a goal in the next game and everything will be forgotten. We’re there for him.” As quoted by the Evening Standard.
